Rose Griffin: Where Speech Pathology and Autism meet

What is the connection between speech therapy and autism?

What level of the spectrum of autism is appropriate for speech therapy intervention?

What are some simple tips and activities parents and teachers can include to connect to autistic children?

Rose Griffin is dedicated to professional development so that your autistic learners can find their voice. She says, ‘I believe in a world where all Autistic Learners have a way to communicate with the world.
I am one of less than 550 people who are both a speech-language pathologist and board-certified behavior analyst.
I worked for 20 years in the public school setting and in non-public programs for autistic learners.
Six years ago I had the idea for a therapy product – the Action Builder Cards. I brought that product to market and created my company – ABA SPEECH.
My workshops are engaging and practical, and participants walk away with new tools they can begin to use immediately in their work.

Activities to use this podcast in your language classes:

  1. Rose explains how making information visible is key to helping autistic students (and all students, actually), assimilate new knowledge. Pick 10 terms randomly from the podcast (or from the next lesson you are going to begin), find 30 images for them, give them to your students (in sets), and ask them to connect the terms to the images. Be sure to explain that there is no one correct answer, but any answer they can justify is ‘correct’.
  2. One focus of Rose’s work is finding ways for dissimilar groups to work together so that there is harmony and a shared objective in any task at hand. Give your students two contentious ways to look at a topic you are about to begin. The students work in groups to make lists of ways these two seemingly divergent subjects could have a common bridge to join them together.
  3. Another challenge in speech therapy and special needs in the realm of autism, is that people from many different fields need to come to agreements for the benefit of the child. Choose one issue from a unit you are about to begin, fabricate a misunderstanding, and students work in groups to use negotiating techniques to find a way of coming to a harmonious resolution of the challenge.
