Scaffolding with Art to Chunk Dense Material (Higher Education)

You’re coming up to a unit that you know is going to cause major stress to your students and so you’re anxious as well. What do you do? The trick is tricking your students – into thinking that a fun activity doesn’t have anything to do with learning! What? If you ask your students to play, draw, compare interpretations of a word or image, you’re giving them play time – when they probably haven’t played in ages. And they’re learning the academic language and concepts of the unit they’re about to begin without even realising. How much fun is THAT?!

Too often we focus only on content, but being specific about the language structure, grammar and clarity of meaning ahead of time, students feel more supported and are therefore more able to confidently participate. Here are the steps, the templates, and examples so you can adapt this scaffold into your lessons TODAY!!!!
