Scaffolding videos is crucial. Many professors use videos to introduce new material, but without scaffolding, the dynamics is the same as giving a direct-teaching lesson/lecture: the students sit passively listening with little or no interaction. Many times, we think an effective scaffold of a video is by pausing it periodically and testing our students’ comprehension, but this is an assessment and not a scaffold – it tests them on what they may have learnt while watching the video, but it doesn’t help them learn key concepts, or academic language beforewatching so that the viewing is more meaningful and less taxing (meaning that they won’t suffer from cognitive overload).
This scaffold is an effective way of introducing images, concepts, phrases, etc. from any video you choose to show in class and very easy to prepare. The idea is to give your students the opportunity to interact with new material using critical thinking. The video used as an example here is about the controversial ‘Take a Knee’ topic, designed for a class of judges, preparing for a debate on ethsics. You’ll see how you can use it for virtually any video you need to show in your courses. This scaffold has been used at every educational level and it’s been proven time and again that tudents become engaged immediately. Later, when they begin the targeted studies, they quickly realise how much knowledge they have already assimilated from having participated in the activity.
