Deciding on the use authentic materials (the use in teaching of texts, photographs, video selections and other teaching resources that were not specially prepared for pedagogical purposes) versus graded materials (standardised grammar and vocabulary) is always a challenge for teachers. There are advantages and disadvantage of both; however, with a bit of preparation and some thoughtful scaffolds, we can almost always use the former and help our students to feel confident in the language they’ll be exposed to in authentic situations.
This scaffold uses Homer’s The Odyssey to exemplify the power of using images and key academic language to transition into new knowledge. We focus on sequencing phrases as well, as reinforcing the order of events is proven to help the brain deepen comprehension. * Admittedly, The Odyssey is a challenging text to use in a Secondary class; however, using the activity outlined here as the introductory scaffold and then continuing with supportive scaffolding techniques and activities throughout, you’ll find that the reading of the book with your students to be an extremely satisfying and educational experience for all. And if you can successfully scaffold The Odyssey, you’ll have success in pretty much everything else!
