theory behind scaffold…

One very effective way that students can master academic language is by creating graphic organisers such as a Frayer modelWord Splashes, or Anchor Charts. A graphic organiser is a visual display that demonstrates relationships between words, facts, concepts, or ideas.*

Part of the challenge of teaching languages is that many times the same word holds different meanings in different contexts. As educators, because we are used to these shades of meanings and so can switch between content automatically, we often forget that students may be confused when faced with a word that does not ostensibly make sense in a given context.

This scaffold gives students the opportunity to explore different meanings of words over an arch of subject matter and with the aid of images. This scaffold can also be easily converted to a translanguaging exercise by converting some of the terms that define the images to the home language of the students while maintaining the graphic organiser in the classroom language (as you’ll see in the template provided).  We use a lesson from Natural Sciences to show the technique.
