One of the greatest challenges we have as pre-school teachers is to help students to avoid cognitive overload. We have an enormous quantity of information we want to present to them, but many times, we ask our young learners to assimilate a bulk of information that is difficult – either because of the content, an incompatible teaching method, or because of a limited time frame. In these circumstances, mental resources become stretched and the ability to assimilate the required material is reduced.* Using interactive scaffolding techniques such as puzzles helps to reduce the stress on mental resources by creating a problem-solving activity that combines multi-sensory foci.

There are a variety of examples given below – the alphabet, mathematical concepts, definitions of terms, conjugations of irregular verbs – and you’ll see how easy it is to adapt the activity to your needs.
