Cultural differences extend far past language, greetings, gestures, dress and beliefs. The very space we create when we meet people – or the absence of that space – is indicative of where we come from and what our understanding is of the comfort level of those we are with.  This scaffold is tied closely with the affect domain.* Pre-schoolers in general are very physical and recognize very little personal space – if any; however, it`s a good idea, no matter how young, to help students learn to explore the different comfort levels of the people around them. In this way, they will become more understanding and compassionate citizens of the world as they grow.

This scaffold uses Karolina Korhonen’s collection of hugely popular comic strips Finnish Nightmares to introduce an activity on personal space. We`ve taken the characters and isolated them from the cartoon strip to accommodate pre-schoolers and facilitiate their visualization of differences in space.
