As teachers of language learners, we often struggle with the question of whether to use authentic*materials in our lessons, and this struggle begins in pre-school. The alternative is to use stories and materials that have been graded** (adapted, manipulated) to facilitate our young students in the acquisition of information. Though the grammar may be easier to digest in this latter approach, the disadvantage is that it is fabricated and so unrealistic. On the other hand, the use of authentic materials also has some disadvantages as stories will include relatively esoteric vocabulary and untamed grammatical structures; however, the students learn the language as they will interact with it in real-life situations, and they will have the added benefits of assimilating the interdisciplinary themes as well.
What can help pre-school teachers in making the decision between these two styles is knowing the natural proclivity of young learners to assimilate information in any context. With this in mind, if we scaffold the stories we choose for them, we help them to interact with the vocabulary, phrases and content with even more ease.
