One would think that at university level, classroom behaviour should not be an issue. You have mature students who have been socialised in the academic sphere for most of their lives. Yet the world is changing, educational figures are often not valued as they once were, and there is technology. The latter, alone, beseeches pause and consideration. No matter our expectations and hopes, our students cannot read our minds nor know that, aside from adhering to common courtesy, we may have idiosyncrasies that will help the classes to run more smoothly. Therefore, it is prudent for us to take a few moments – ideally in the introductory phase of the course – to address expectations in both directions*; that is, expectations you  have for your students and their expectations of the course. This scaffold helps to elucidate the underlying beliefs of both parties.

This scaffold includes sound educational practices that are illuminated when building lessons with the 5Cs (the structure touted by the CLIL approach), movement, interaction, and team building. The most successful lists are concise and clear, and we share such a list with you that might be useful. You’ll see how the activity will enable you to take what you need, adapt the rest for your circumstances, and begin (or continue) the year with a strong sense of community and willingness from all, putting the focus on learning.
