Cultural differences extend far past language, greetings, gestures, dress and beliefs. The very space we create when we meet people, or the absence of that space, is indicative of where we come from and our understanding of the comfort level of those we are with. Focusing on the affective side of learning, this scaffold helps students to recognise cultural differences in the physical space they may afford or subtract, so that they can become more understanding and compassionate people as they move through the world.
Emotional intelligence is defined as ‘the capacity for recognising our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships.’ (Goleman 1993:317). Findings show that emotional intelligence is malleable and can be fostered with focused attention and effort. (Brackett and Katulak, 2006). What this implies is that teachers and also learners can improve their emotional skills. (Mercer, 2017). Here’s to beginnings!
Beginning with a beautifully descriptive and concise representation of the typical Finnish need for a large radius of physical space depicted in Karolina Korhonen’s collection of hugely popular comic strips Finnish Nightmares, this scaffold helps introduce students to the different perceptions and importance given to physical space in different cultures.
