At the university level it is still essential that we give our students the opportunity to practice and reinforce grammar structures. Just as with academic language, this focus helps students to gain more traction in their ability to express themselves, a skill that is fundamental to their success in the professional world.* This scaffold is an interactive game to reinforce the comparative and superlative structure (essential in most authentic conversations), plus the content you are about to present. In this case, we´ll use material from a course in criminology to flesh out the activity.
Many university professors are reluctant to stop lecturing and let their students participate more in class, citing as their number one reason that they will not be able to complete the curriculum if they deviate. You´ll find, however, that on the contrary, by giving your students the opportunity to interact with the material they´re going to be studying, their deeper understanding of the concepts will more than compensate for the time taken away from lecturing. You´ll have, in the end, a group of students with a deepper and more secure knowledge base of the subject and how to express it, and so will be more receptive to the remainder of the unit/course.
