Winter is the time of celebrations of light. Through comic strips, this scaffold will help students to recognise  the multi-cultural holidays historically created to help vanquish the fear surrounding the short days of the months (in the northern hemisphere), before and after the winter solstice.   clil WINTER HOLIDAYS SOLSTICE

Beginning with a model of a comic strip by Jay Ryan presenting the scientific explanation of the winter solstice, students choose different holidays to create a series of comic strips of their own. The comic strips explain the history and modes of celebration of these holidays from around the world.

Step By Step: CLIL WINTER HOLIDAY SOLSTICE
  1. Give students a copy of the comic strip ‘Starman‘ by Jay Ryan giving a simple explanation of the winter solstice.
  2. Give each group a copy of the PDF of simple explanations of different winter holidays and the winter solstice.
  3. Students choose three holidays from the PDF, distribute the work evenly amongst their group members, and make three sequential comic strips depicting the history and facts of each of the holidays they’ve chosen, with images that represent the text in each frame. (Comic strip templates.)
  4. Mount the groups’ four (4) comic strips on the wall (each of them beginning with the Starman strip).
  5. Students go around in pairs, with notebooks, and write comments on each of their classmates’ comic strips. (Possible questions below.)
