One of the greatest challenges we have as teachers is to help students to avoid cognitive overload. Many times we ask our students to learn a bulk of information that is difficult for them to assimilate – either because of the content, an asychronous teaching method, or because of a limited time frame. In these circumstances, mental resources become stretched and the ability to assimilate the required material is reduced.* Using interactive scaffolding techniques such as puzzles helps to reduce the stress on mental resources by creating a problem-solving activity that combines different sensory foci.

The scaffold below is designed for a secondary math class. Using mathematical functions already taught (adding fractions), and introducing new ones (simplifying fractions), students complete the design by bridging the gap between what they already know and what they can piece together by logic and critical thinking.
