‘The mind is not designed for thinking.’* These are probably not the words you were hoping to read as you look for ideas for your lessons. And yet, the experts insist that it’s true. As young as they are, our young students rely on their memory – the resource that’s easiest to access – when they begin any task. So we just have to include critical thinkingstrategies in our lesson, right? In theory, yes. However, it’s been proven that critical thinking is domain specific, which means that a strategy you use in a science lesson may not work in a maths class, and one that works in a maths class may not work to help them absorb more information when listening to a story. Therefore, as educators, we need to help our students fill their toolbox of critical thinking techniques, even and especially in their first years of school, so that they are prepared for as many situations as possible.
This scaffold presents one way students fight against this biological tendency towards laziness – of relying on memory instead of working actively to assimilate new knowledge. We present here a lesson from a Natural Science class on domestic and wild animals, and you’ll see how you can adapt it to any lesson you’re about to begin.
