There is a bizarre and interesting consequence of the digital age and it’s unexpected: speech therapists have found their work has multiplied exponentially in the past few years. They attribute this to a generation of students who spend more hours on their phones and computers, sending and reading short texts, rather than connecting verbally.
What better way, then, to counteract this than to give students many opportunities to communicate verbally. If we can throw in critical thinking in the same activity, we are rocking our profession and our students’ world!
Warm-ups with verbal and visual skills that include deeper-level thinking, help students to strengthen, build and diversify language as well as to use skills they might not develop by themselves.
You’ll find that this Warm-Up is not only a fantastic way of introducing new content, it’s also a lot of fun and your students will ask for you to use it as an introduction once and again throughout the school year.

They work in pairs, exchange information with classmates, find antonyms to intentionally confuse – in a proactive way – their classmates, and then maintain autonomy by checking the work of other pairs themselves. Even though it has so many levels and shades of skills, it is simple to prepare and you’ll want to use it over and over again. Have fun!!!
